Permanently losing weight can be quite a struggle, especially when it doesn’t go according to plan. Sometimes you do ok, other times you only lose a few pounds and quite regularly you won’t lose a single gram. How is this possible?
Why (permanent) weight loss fails: 5 causes
Permanently losing weight can be quite a struggle, especially when it doesn’t go according to plan. Sometimes you do ok, other times you only lose a few pounds and quite regularly you won’t lose a single gram. How is this possible?
If your hormones are no longer balanced, you can still gain weight without eating too much or too little (!) and exercising too much or too little.
Not being able to lose or maintain weight can be caused by several things
Not every pound goes in through the mouth, contrary to what is often claimed. After all, nutrition is certainly not the only cause of obesity.
When permanent weight loss fails, various factors can play a role.
Cause 1: Hormonal disturbances
Hormones affect everything that happens in your body, including your weight. The hormones that play a crucial role in weight regulation are:
- Stress hormone (cortisol)
- Sugar hormone (insulin)
- One of the female hormones (estrogen)
- The male hormones (testosterone and DHEA)
- Growth hormone
- Hunger hormone (ghrelin)
- Satiety hormone (leptin)
All sorts of factors can cause your hormones to become unbalanced:
- Unhealthy nutrition
- Insufficient movement / sports
- Too little sleep
- Too much stress
- Etc.
Once your hormones are out of balance, you end up in a state of fat-storage. This makes it difficult to lose kilos (fat) and lose weight. In this case, dieting, eating less or doing a lot of sports makes no sense at all. What’s more, you will bring your hormones even further out of balance. This is because your body experiences ‘less food’ and ‘too much sport’ as stress. And due to this stress, your hormones become imbalanced.

Not every pound goes in through the mouth.
Cause 2: Ayurveda
Within Ayurveda you are unique. You are born with qualities and characteristics that are laid down in your “constitution” (*). Three constitution types are distinguished, namely the “deer”, “tiger” and “elephant-type”. As far as nutrition and body weight are concerned, each constitution type has:
- A different type of metabolism
- Preference of food
- Food intolerances
- Predisposition to being overweight
When you maintain a diet (and lifestyle) that does not fit your constitution type, your body and constitution get out of balance. This leads to all kinds of complaints and (permanent) weight loss becomes problematic.
Cause 3: Disruption of the microbes in your intestine
Proper functioning of your intestines is very important for good health and finding a natural weight that suits you. Food is absorbed into your intestines with the help of your microbes (formerly ‘intestinal flora’). When your intestines cannot do their job properly, they do not absorb the nutrients, causing deficiencies. As a result, all kinds of body processes no longer work well, including your fat burning. This leads to fat storage, making it difficult to lose weight.
Candida can also be a cause of disturbance to the microbes in your intestine, resulting in obesity.

Cause 4: Excess toxins
Chemicals that your body sees as foreign and that it does not recognise are poisonous. Examples are:
- Odour, colouring and flavourings
- Pesticides
- Medicinal products, including the contraceptive pill
- Cosmetics and skin care products
- Environmental pollution
- Etc.
If the supply of toxic substances is too great, the liver cannot process them. The result is that the toxic substances are stored in your fat cells. The more toxic substances you ingest, the more fatty tissue is needed and produced in order to store them. Your fatty tissue has become a waste depot.
Cause 5: Psycho / emotional complaints
Eating too much unhealthy food due to psychological / emotional complaints (or when you are not feeling well) is a well-known phenomenon. We all do it sometimes. Think of the appetite for a chocolate bar just before your period or a whole pack of biscuits after a stressful day.
Eating acts as a comforter to help you feel better. If this occasionally occurs in small quantities it is acceptable.
However, it becomes a problem when it becomes a habit. When eating is the only way to comfort yourself when you are stressed, angry or sad and not feeling well.

Conclusion
Now that you know that multiple elements play a role in not being able to lose weight, hopefully you will understand why you often feel that you have no grip on achieving and maintaining your natural weight. If you want to lose weight successfully and maintain your natural weight, then it is important to look further than the amount you eat and exercise.
Above I have mentioned five causes. Just like these causes, the solutions are very diverse. Each cause requires its own measures.
In this programme, I will limit myself to two causes in particular: an imbalance in your microbiome (intestinal flora) and hormonal disturbances.
