Sightseeing Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is especially loved for its unique landscape. Nowhere else on the Canary Islands will you find such untouched nature and overwhelming tranquillity. It is not for nothing that it is increasingly being discovered by hikers and cyclists.

Apart from nature, which you will find all over the island, there are a number of interesting sights worth visiting. Apart from a few of these excursions, in most places you will literally only meet a few other visitors. No queues and no expensive entrance fees (often only a few euros, or free).

Mirador de Morro Velosa

“Mirador de Morro Velosa” is one of the most famous viewpoints in Fuerteventura. It’s located in the central mountain landscape around Betancuria, at an altitude of over 600 m. Mirador de Morro Velosa includes a (small) restaurant where you can have a drink and something small to eat, and an interesting exhibition about how Fuerteventura was formed and about the geography. Amongst other things, you will find a 3-D model of the island.

The Mirador can be reached by car, by bike or on foot and is situated about 15 km from Villa Vital.

Entrance is free.

Villa Winter, a mystery from the war?

Villa Winter is located near the small village of Cofete, in the far south-west of Fuerteventura. The villa is surrounded by mysterious stories, partly fuelled by its very remote location.

Villa Winter was built in 1937 by German engineer and Colonel Gustav Winter, Nazi spy and confidant of Adolf Hitler. The strategic location of the villa is associated with the fact that it was used for secret military operations and as a supply station for German submarines. A beachfront cemetery near the villa also leads to speculation in this regard.

Mill museum (Museo de los Molinos)

In the Mill Museum in Tiscamanita (5 km from Villa Vital) you can see an old mill from the inside. The museum also shows the preparation of the famous gofio. Gofio is a flour-like powder that served as a basic food for the original inhabitants of the Canary Islands (the Guances); they stirred it into goat’s milk or broth.

Cheese museum (Museo del Queso Majorero)

In the cheese museum in Antigua (5 km from Villa Vital) you can see an old mill from the inside. The museum also shows how the famous majorero cheese was and is produced.

There is also a small shop where you can buy different kinds of cheese, local liquor and handicrafts. You can also visit the shop without having to pay an entrance fee.

Salt museum (Museo de la Sal)

The Salt Museum is located in the small town of Salinas del Carmen (2 km from Caleta de Fuste). Here you can see the role salt had (and has) in the history of the island of Fuerteventura. In the past, freshly caught fish was preserved with the salt that was extracted here. Nowadays, the salt flats of Salinas del Carmen have a cultural-historical value. You can see in photographs the ways in which salt is extracted all over the world. On film you can see how the process of salt mining takes place on Fuerteventura. You can also see how salt is used in food, but also industrially.

Black Caves of Ajuy

One of the most famous tourist attractions on Fuerteventura is a visit to the Black Caves of Ajuy. This town is located on the west coast, about halfway across the island.

You can reach the caves via a relatively easy walk of about 15 – 20 minutes from the town of Ajuy. This walk itself is also worthwhile, because of the eroded rocks that you walk along and over.

Tip: If possible, go there when the tide is out and/or when the wind comes from the (north) west. Then you have the best waves.

Oasis Wildlife Park

Oasis Park in La Lajita consists of two parts:

A wildlife park / zoo
A garden centre

The garden centre can be visited free of charge and is a true paradise for garden lovers. All kinds of plants, cactuses and trees, some of which are 3 metres high or more.

The wildlife park is very spacious and the animals get all the space they deserve. Really a day out! This is why it costs € 35,= (for adults).

From the larger (tourist) towns on the island, free buses of Oasis drive to the park / garden centre.

Local markets

There are (weekly) markets at various places on the island. Most of them are aimed at tourists. On some markets you will find mainly local craftsmen who try to sell their self-made goods. On other markets you will find mostly “trinkets” / fake stuff, especially from African sellers.

La Lajita

One of the larger and more pleasant markets on the island.
Here you will find everything: vegetable vendors, a German baker, but also special homemade souvenirs, paintings, etc.
Every Sunday morning, right next to the entrance of the garden centre of Oasis Wildlife Park.

Lajares

Cosy, small market with very original stuff.
Every Saturday morning.

Caleta de Fuste

Large, very touristy market aimed mainly at people staying in Caleta de Fuste. Here you will find few really nice souvenirs, but mostly belts, bags, etc. of African origin.

Every Tuesday & Saturday morning. The market is held along the main road (FV-2), near the roundabout.

Corralejo

Every Friday morning. The market takes place near the Aqua Park.

Costa Calma

Every Sunday morning.
